[Easy Japanese - Beginner's Guide #8] Essential "Medical Care and Pharmacy" Phrases for Living in Japan
When living in Japan, sudden illness or injury can be very stressful. Being able to accurately communicate your physical condition when visiting a clinic or pharmacy makes receiving medical care much safer and smoother.
Don't worry—you don't need difficult medical terms. Let's learn the essential phrases to describe your symptoms and get the help you need!
1. Explaining Your Symptoms to the Doctor (byouin de no shoujou)
When you visit a clinic or hospital (byouin), the doctor will ask what is wrong. Use these simple sentences to explain how you feel.
(Netsu ga arimasu.) – I have a fever.
(Onaka ga itai desu.) – My stomach hurts.
(Atama ga itai desu / Nodo ga itai desu.) – I have a headache / My throat hurts.
💡 Tip: If you can, check your temperature with a thermometer before going to the clinic and write the number down. Showing the number to the receptionist or doctor makes everything much smoother!
2. At the Pharmacy (kusuri-ya / yakkyoku)
After seeing a doctor, you will take your prescription to a nearby pharmacy to get your medicine.
(Shohosen o onegai shimasu.) – Here is my prescription.
(Arerugii wa arimasu ka?) – (The pharmacist asks) Do you have any allergies?
(Nomikata o oshiete kudasai.) – Please tell me how to take this medicine.
💡 Tip: Japanese pharmacies always give detailed instructions on medicine bags (e.g., "After meals, 3 times a day"). If you are unsure, ask the pharmacist to write it down or use plain English.
3. Useful Emergency Phrases (Kinkyuu no toki)
In a serious medical emergency, knowing how to call for help can save a life.
(Kyuukyuusha o yonde kudasai.) – Please call an ambulance.
(Kibun ga warui desu.) – I feel sick / nauseous.
(Tasukete kudasai.) – Please help me.
💡 Tip: In Japan, dialing 119 connects you directly to the fire department for an ambulance. If you cannot speak Japanese well, saying 「きゅうきゅうしゃ、おねがいします」 along with your current address is the most important thing.
