[Easy Japanese - Beginner's Guide #11] Essential "Post Office and Mail Delivery" Phrases for Living in Japan
Receiving mail, packages, and sending letters or parcels is an essential part of daily life. While online shopping is extremely popular and convenient in Japan, missing a delivery slip can sometimes be confusing if you don't know what to do.
Don't worry—you don't need difficult vocabulary. Let's learn the essential phrases for handling mail and delivery services smoothly!
1. Receiving Packages and Redelivery Slips (Fuzai-hyou)
When a delivery driver (like Yamato Transport or Japan Post) comes and you are not at home, they will leave a redelivery slip called a 「不在票 (Fuzai-hyou)」 in your mailbox.
「不在票 (Fuzai-hyou):」 Absentee notice / Redelivery slip.
「再配達をお願いします。」 (Saihaitatsu o onegai shimasu.) – Please redeliver the package.
「何時頃に届きますか?」 (Nanji goro ni todokimasu ka?) – Around what time will it arrive?
💡 Tip: Most delivery companies in Japan let you request redelivery online or via a smartphone QR code printed on the slip. You can choose a specific time slot when you will definitely be home!
2. At the Post Office Counter (Yuubinkyoku no madoguchi)
If you need to send a letter, mail a package back to your home country, or pick up registered mail, visiting the post office is necessary.
「これを国に送りたいです。」 (Kore o kuni ni okuritai desu.) – I want to send this to my home country.
「切手をください。」 (Kitte o kudasai.) – Please give me a stamp.
「EMSでお願いします。」 (Eemuesu de onegai shimasu.) – EMS (Express Mail Service) shipping, please.
💡 Tip: When sending international parcels, you will need to fill out a customs declaration form. Doing this online via the Japan Post international mail service website beforehand makes your visit to the post office much faster!
3. Useful Phrases for Changing Your Address (Jusho henkou)
When you move to a new apartment in Japan, updating your mailing address quickly ensures you don't miss important bills or mail.
「住所を変更したいです。」 (Jusho o henkou shitai desu.) – I want to change my address.
「転送サービスをお願いします。」 (Tensou saabisu o onegai shimasu.) – Please set up mail forwarding (to forward your old mail to your new address for free for one year).
「本人確認書類はこれですか?」 (Honnin kakunin shorui wa kore desu ka?) – Is this ID acceptable for verification?
💡 Tip: Japan Post offers a free mail forwarding service (Tensou Service) for one year when you move. You can apply easily online or with a simple form at the post office counter using your Residence Card.
